Signs you have hard water

  • White, chalky crust on taps, shower heads and kettles
  • Spots and film on dishes and glassware, even after the dishwasher
  • Soap and shampoo that will not lather, and a filmy feeling after showering
  • Dry, itchy skin and dull, brittle hair
  • Laundry that feels stiff and fades quickly
  • Water heaters that rumble or need replacing early

Much of southern Ontario has hard to very hard water, so these problems are common on both city and well water.

How a water softener works

Water flows through a tank of resin beads that attract calcium and magnesium, the minerals that cause hardness, and swap them for a small amount of sodium or potassium. When the resin is full, the softener rinses itself with brine from the salt tank and starts fresh. Modern high-efficiency models only regenerate when you have actually used enough water, saving salt and water.

Choosing the right softener

Your local store sizes every system to your water hardness, iron level and household size.

Cabinet softeners

All-in-one design with a compact footprint. Ideal for most city homes, condos and townhouses.

Twin-tank softeners

Separate resin and brine tanks for higher capacity, larger families and very hard well water.

Combination units

Soften and remove iron or manganese in one system, a great fit for rural wells.

Owning a softener

Salt: most homes add one or two bags a month. Keep the salt level above the water line. Many stores deliver salt and can remind you when it is time.

Potassium option: on a low-sodium diet? Potassium chloride works in place of salt, and a reverse osmosis system removes sodium from your drinking water.

Service: a yearly check and resin cleaner keep your softener running at peak efficiency for 15 years or more.
