Question 1

Do I need a filter or a softener?

Accepted Answer

Softeners remove hardness. Filters remove things like chlorine, iron, sulphur and sediment. Many homes benefit from both. A free test tells you which.

Question 2

Why does my water smell like rotten eggs?

Accepted Answer

Usually hydrogen sulphide gas from the well or a reaction in your water heater. A sulphur filter, and sometimes a water heater anode change, solves it.

Question 3

Is the water test really free?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Your local store tests your water at no cost and with no obligation.

Question 4

My home is on city water. Do I need treatment?

Accepted Answer

City water is safe to drink, but it is often hard and treated with chlorine. Many families add a softener and a reverse osmosis system for better taste and to protect appliances.

Question 5

Do you install and service systems?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Certified installers set up your system, and your store handles maintenance, filters and repairs.

Question 6

How often are reverse osmosis filters changed?

Accepted Answer

Pre-filters are usually changed every 6 to 12 months and the membrane every 2 to 3 years, depending on your water.

Question 7

Does reverse osmosis waste water?

Accepted Answer

RO uses some water to flush the membrane. Modern efficient systems and permeate pumps greatly reduce the amount.

Question 8

Does RO remove healthy minerals?

Accepted Answer

Yes, along with contaminants. Most minerals come from food, and a remineralizing stage can add calcium and magnesium back for taste.

Question 9

How often do I add salt to a softener?

Accepted Answer

Most households add a bag or two a month. High-efficiency softeners use far less. Many stores offer salt delivery.

Question 10

Does softened water add a lot of sodium?

Accepted Answer

Very little for most homes. If you are on a sodium-restricted diet, use potassium chloride or add a reverse osmosis system for drinking water.

Question 11

How long does a water softener last?

Accepted Answer

With regular salt and yearly service, a quality softener can last 15 years or more.

Question 12

Should I test my well for bacteria?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Test regularly through a certified lab, and consider UV disinfection for ongoing protection.

Question 13

How often is a UV lamp replaced?

Accepted Answer

Once a year. The lamp can still glow after it stops producing enough UV to disinfect.
